Field Notes Foundation

Field Notes Archive

A responsive editorial platform and modular CMS that turns exhibitions, essays, collections, and research into an engaging public archive.

A responsive editorial platform and modular CMS that turns exhibitions, essays, collections, and research into an engaging public archive.

Overview / The creative premise

Field Notes Archive treats digital publishing as a designed system rather than a stack of templates. We led information architecture, art direction, interaction design, responsive prototyping, and front-end implementation.

01 / 13

Problem

Years of exhibitions, essays, recordings, and collection records lived across disconnected tools. Visitors could not understand relationships between programmes, and editors avoided publishing because every page required technical support.

02 / 13

Research

We analysed search behaviour, content types, accessibility needs, and editorial workflows. Card sorting with visitors and curators revealed that themes, people, places, and time needed to work together as equal paths through the archive.

03 / 13

Solution

We built an adaptive editorial grid, expressive article templates, a connected taxonomy, powerful search, and reusable CMS modules that preserve design quality while giving editors genuine flexibility.

04 / 13

Challenges

The platform had to serve visual browsing, deep research, multilingual content, and older media formats without becoming slow or visually chaotic. Performance and accessibility were treated as design materials from the start.

05 / 13

Feature 01

Connected records let visitors move naturally between an exhibition, artist, essay, location, and related archive material without returning to a rigid index.

06 / 13

Feature 02

Responsive story modules support galleries, film, audio, footnotes, pull quotes, timelines, and data while maintaining a consistent editorial rhythm.

07 / 13

Feature 03

A documented CMS and component library gives editors safe creative range, reducing production time while protecting typography, spacing, and accessibility.

08 / 13

Feature 04

A connected taxonomy links exhibitions, artists, essays, locations, collection records, and related media so visitors can follow ideas across the archive without returning to a rigid index.

09 / 13

Feature 05

Multimedia story modules support image galleries, film, audio, timelines, data, captions, footnotes, and pull quotes while maintaining a readable rhythm from desktop research sessions to mobile visits.

10 / 13

Feature 06

The publishing toolkit gives editors reusable blocks, multilingual fields, accessibility checks, responsive previews, and safe creative controls, reducing technical support without reducing editorial range.
